A new nationwide survey underway on Chinese farmers’ land rights

SEPTEMBER 30, 2011 — Landesa’s China program is teaming up again with China’s Renmin University and Michigan State University to conduct a new round of nationwide survey on farmers’ land rights, which is the sixth in the series. The survey covers 17 major agricultural provinces in China based on interviews with more than 2,000 farm families across rural China. The survey provides an updated and comprehensive snapshot of a wide range of important topics including land transactions, compulsory land takings, farmers’ awareness of legal land rights, and farmers’ investment in land.

Last year’s survey findings became a widely read and cited source for the macro trends of China’s agriculture, particularly the rise in land acquisitions.

Landesa’s China team expects to carry out data analysis in the fall and conduct a series of policy briefings on survey findings with senior officials of the Chinese government, development agencies, research institutions, donors and supporters.
