Announcing the LandAssess Tool:

Demystifying land risks for company supply chains

Announcing the LandAssess Tool

GLOBAL – In recent years, numerous companies have made commitments to better recognize and respect land rights throughout their supply chains. To support companies in implementing their commitments, Landesa developed the LandAssess Tool, a risk assessment and management resource that helps them conduct land rights due diligence and monitoring.

Using a set of clear and simple checklists, the LandAssess Tool guides companies through a series of questions to measure whether they have carried out specific actions that demonstrate compliance with best practices for responsible land-based investment.

From hungry to food secure

Legally owning farm land has dramatically improved life for Karamdev and his family.

INDIA – Karamdev Bhuiyan lives in Lutua, a rural village in the Indian state of Bihar. In 2007, he was allocated 3.6 acres of farm land, but his name was not recorded in the official land registry. Without a secure record of his land rights, Karamdev still had to migrate as a daily agricultural laborer to find work, and often lacked enough food or money to support his family. His children were forced to leave school so they could supplement the family income, too.

To help families like Karamdev’s get full possession of their land, Landesa worked with the local government to update land records. Karamdev was identified by government officials trained by Landesa, and finally got his name in the land registry last year.

Now, Karamdev’s family is food secure. By growing paddy, wheat, and vegetables, they don’t go hungry anymore, and they’ll even have some surplus to sell. After the harvest, Karamdev plans to grow onion and tomato, from which he expects to earn INR 25000-30000 (USD$365-$440).

On July 13th, we'd like to wish a happy birthday to our founder, Roy Prosterman! After his law review article about market-friendly land reform caught the attention of US government officials in 1966, Roy has dedicated his life to securing land rights for the world’s poorest people. To date, Landesa has strengthened land rights for over 180 million families.

Thank you for your incredible support!
