Landesa, as part of its Coastal Livelihoods and Mangroves Program, conducted a 20-year longitudinal assessment of eight community-managed mangrove forests across coastal Thailand. The study compared mangrove forest cover dynamics between these Community Forests and surrounding mangroves areas, and suggests that CFs demonstrate improved forest management, with forest cover loss rates half those of surrounding areas. The data suggests that three government policies in Thailand — the 2015 Marine and Coastal Resources Management Act, the 2015 Royal Ordinance on Fisheries, and the 2019 Community Forest Act — provided a critical framework to support community stewardship of Thailand’s coastal ecosystems.
