Landesa strongly condemns the use of deadly force against those participating in the Civil Disobedience Movement, and calls on the police and armed services to respect the human rights of the people of Myanmar and to cease the use of force immediately.
Landesa continues to monitor the ongoing situation in Myanmar, where the military has declared a state of emergency and assumed control of the government.
Landesa’s top priority is the safety and well-being of our dozens of staff and contractors and the communities where we work. Despite local disruptions to telephone and internet, we have been in regular contact with our local program leadership, and have verified that our employees are safe and accounted for. Our offices in Myanmar are temporarily closed as a safety precaution, and Landesa staff have been encouraged to remain at home.
Landesa strongly supports fundamental democratic principles and the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including of free expression and peaceful assembly, and encourages all parties to resolve the present events peacefully. We agree with the statement by the ASEAN Chair delivered this month, that the principles of democracy enshrined in the ASEAN Charter should be respected. We agree with the Chair’s call for “the return to normalcy in accordance with the will and interests of the people of Myanmar.”
