Cocktail reception and networking opportunity with leading voices in land rights and women’s empowerment
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 30, 2019
Secure land rights create pathways to prosperity and empower women economically and socially. Yet millions worldwide still encounter barriers to gender-equal land rights, constraining women from the full realization of their human rights. How can women overcome these obstacles to take control of their land and their lives?
Join Landesa, an internationally recognized land rights NGO, for “Creating a Gender Equal World: The Transformative Power of Women’s Land Rights,” a cocktail reception and networking event on the eve of the Women Deliver 2019 Conference, from 6-8 pm Sunday, June 2, West Meeting Room 221 at the Vancouver Convention Center.
An expert panel will explore how women’s land rights are linked to other measures of gender equality: protection from gender based violence, food security, education, women and girls’ agency and empowerment in their homes and other pressing challenges women face worldwide, and discuss a new global advocacy campaign – Stand for Her Land – that aims to close the gap between law and practice to ensure women have access to their land rights, not only on paper, but in their daily lives. We will also preview an upcoming Sundance-funded documentary featuring a community’s effort to empower women to realize their land rights in rural Kenya.
Speakers include Laurie Adams, CEO of Women for Women International, Dr. Monica Mhoja, Tanzania Program Director, Landesa, Esther Mwaura, Founder of GROOTS Kenya, Papa Seck, Chief Statistician of UN Women. Moderated by Chris Jochnick, CEO of Landesa. A live stream of the program will be broadcast via Facebook Live, available at www.facebook.com/LandesaGlobal.
